Tokyo Parlympic Games bronze medallist Abdulrahman Abdulqadir Fiqi returns home to a warm welcome
Tokyo Parlympic Games bronze medallist Abdulrahman Abdulqadir Fiqi
returned home to a warm welcome on Tuesday morning.
The Tokyo Games bronze
medal winner was received at the Hamad International Airport by fans, friends
and officials of Qatar Paralympics committee.
This is the second medal
in three Games for Abdulrahman.
On September 4, Rio Games silver
medalist Abdulrahman clinched bronze in the men's F34 seated shot put at the
Paralympics Games in Japan.
Ahmad Hindi of Jordan won gold with
a new world record while Morocco’s’ Azeddine Nouiri took the silver.
Qatar, which sent two athletes to
the Games, thus collected their first medal of the Games. Abdulrahman,
incidentally is the first athlete representing Qatar to win a medal in any
sport at the Paralympic Games in Rio 2016 and is also the London 2017 world
champion.
The other Qatari athlete in Tokyo,
Sara Masoud, competing in the women’s shot put event did give her best but a
medal eluded her.
At the last Rio Games, Sara has won
a silver medal in the same category.
On Saturday, Hindi gave his best to
set a world record on way to his gold winning feat. He took first place with
12.25 meters in the impressive final of the F34 class ball.
The reigning world champion and
world record holder, had the best result of the year so far from the Dubai
World Para Athletics Grand Prix in February and continued in the same vein.
Two-time gold medallist and
Paralympic record holder Nouiri from Morocco finished second with a throw of
11.55mts.
Rio silver medallist Abdulrahman
Fiqi throw landed at a distance of 11.36mts which got him the bronze medal.
Colombia’s Mauricio Valencia set the
second-best result of the year also at the Dubai GP and has had three bronze
medals in major Para-athletics events, at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, London
2017, and Dubai 2019 Worlds, but a podium place eluded him in Tokyo.
