Rahul Sharma’s
sizzling century fetched QIECO a big 74-run victory over Deccan Warriors in a
Division C match at the popular Qatar Airways T20 Cricket Tournament and the
top spot in Pool D.
Qatar
Airways is proud to be the official sponsor of the annual cricket tournament.
As the country’s national carrier, Qatar Airways continues to play a vital role
in enhancing the already flourishing sports activity in Qatar and is a keen
supporter for developing the next generation of cricket players in the country.
At the West Bay
Grounds, Sharma hammered six sixes and 10 fours to post 102 to steer QIECO to a
huge total of 199 for five. Deepak Verma also chipped in with 64, which
contained two sixes ad six boundaries. Deccan Warriors failed to bear the
run-pressure and collapsed at 125 in 19 overs, with Amir bagging three for 12
and Ankit Chauhan snapping two wickets.
The victory
took QIECO took to the top of their pool with eight points, while slipped to
the fourth after man of the match Dulon inspired Bangla Tigers to pull off a
five-wicket triumph against Prime Gladiators with 69 off 39 ballls. The knock
had two sixes and 10 fours.
Tigers finished
second with six points and qualified for the upcoming quarter-finals on the
best net run-rate among three contending teams. Gladiators were third, while
Baawan Club were fifth despite losing to Al Shaheen Club, who came sixth.
Desert Lions
were the only team to land 10 points among the eight quarter-final qualifiers.
After getting 179 for four, they crushed Nihal XI by 112 runs, with Shakir (53
off 30 balls with three sixes and four boundaries) and Asim (four for 21)
performing brilliantly for the winners in Pool A.
In another
match of the same pool, Super Stars came into the contention for the second
spot after beating Bolar Trading. But Irfan’s 77 runs and two wickets fell a
bit short as his team was edged on the NRR by Nihal XI, who were shot out for
just 67 in 13.1 overs by their rivals. Behind leaders Desert Lions, Nihal XI
were second, while followed by Super Stars (six points), Fearless Fighters
(four points), Bolar Trading (four points) and Dejawu Club (0).
Phoenix Club
got the better of United Warriors on the NRR after both won their matches in
contrasting manners. Phoenix Club were set up for the six-wicket victory by
Akhil, who nailed four for 24. Haji and Srijith shared four scalps when Karwar
Club folded up at 106.
Fatehpur Club
made United Warriors toil for every run before eventually losing by just one
wicket. They made a small 125 for seven. Khalid and Nadeem pocketed two scalps
apiece. Asif troubled Warriors the most and sent their four players back for
13, while Falah had two for 25.
Warriors
however managed to wriggle across the finish line in the 19th over
and collect eight points, same as Phoenix. But the hard-fought win made them
get the second spot in the pool behind Phoenix. Vodafone (six points) and
Phantom (four points) were third and fourth, while Karwar and Fatehpur secured
the fifth and sixth spots, respectively after having two points each.
Nitin, who
struck 53 not out and held two catches, led Wombats Club to a fine four-wicket
victory over Qatar Foundation, dashing the hopes of the rivals being unbeaten
in Pool B. He got some solid support from Aamir and Syed, who hit 41 each to
enable their team to chase down a challenging 170-run target with two balls to
go.
Usman’s 52
boosted Qatar Foundation to 169 for eight. Vicky’s three wickets restricted
them a bit before Nitin compiled his superb half-century. Qatar Foundation
topped the pool with eight points despite the loss, while Wombats managed to
emerge the second qualifier with six points, beating Hilti on the NRR.
Hilti, who
outclassed Multiplex Club by 103 runs, amassed 245 for eight with many players
coming up with useful contributions. The list was topped by Kashif (40 in 13
balls with four sixes and three fours) and Shabbir (38 with three sixes and
four boundaries). Multiplex Club got all out at 142 as Talha Ahmed picked four
for 27 and won the man of the match award.
