2023 FIE Grand Prix Qatar: World and Olympic champions arrive in Doha for fencing event

 


 

Doha, Qatar: Eight fencers will represent hosts Qatar at the FIE Qatar Grand Prix 2023, the first epee Grand Prix of the 2023 calendar year, which began with the Weapon Control on Wednesday morning with action kicking off on Friday morning at Aspire Academy.

 

Organizers of the event Qatar Fencing Federation informed that Weapon Control exercise will be conducted on Thursday morning and also on Friday morning followed by the preliminary rounds.

The preliminary stages will also take place on Saturday, while the main draws will take place on Sunday when the curtains will come down on the championship.

421 fencers from62 countries are taking part in the championship.

Fencers from Algeria, Argentina, Austria, Australia, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Democratic Republic of Congo, China, Colombia, Cameron, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Spain, Estonia, France, Great Britain, Georgia, Ghana, Greece, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Iran, Italy, Iraq, Israel, Virgin Islands, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Morocco, Mauritius, Malaysia, The Netherlands, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Singapore, Switzerland, Slovakia, Turkey, USA, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Venezuela will be seen in action in the event.

Haya Diab will lead Qatar’s challenge in the women’s section while seven other fencers will be competing in the men’s section. The Qatar men’s fencers include: Youssef Abdeltawab, Muhammad Abdulali, Mohammed Al Hazaa, Abdulrahman Al Jadra, Mohammed Al Oulan, Meshaal Al Qahtani and Jaber Al-Fadaaq.

 

Points collected from Qatar will count in the Olympic qualification racefor 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

 

Qualification is based on the FIE Official Player Ranking list, which will be based on points in three competitions (World Cup, World Championship and Continental Championships). and points gained in the Grand Prix, World Cup, satellite competitions, World Championships and Continental Championships counting.

 

The Italian fencing will be present in Qatar with the men's and women's national teams, 24 fencers competing, equally divided between men and women.

In the women's field, CT Dario Chiadò has summoned Rossella Fiamingo, Nicol Foietta, Federica Isola, Roberta Marzani, Mara Navarria, Giulia Rizzi, Alberta Santuccio and Gaia Traditi, to which are added the authorized Alessandra Bozza, Beatrice Cagnin, Sara Maria Kowalczyk and Alessia Pizzini.

In the men's field, however, called Gianpaolo Buzzacchino, Gabriele Cimini, Valerio Cuomo, Davide Di Veroli, Enrico Garozzo, Giacomo Paolini, Enrico Piatti and Andrea Santarelli, to which are added Filippo Armaleo, Luca Diliberto, Giulio Gaetani and Andrea Vallosio.

In the staff, in addition to CT Dario Chiadò, the coaches are Roberto Cirillo, Daniele Pantoni and Alfredo Rota, and the physiotherapist Veronica Balzano are present.
